Tony Dell
Tony Dell - Chairman and Non Executive
Director
Tony arrived in the North East in
1991 when he was appointed as a Director of the DTI Regional
Office. This soon became the Government Office for the North East.
Tony was the lead Director for Trade and Industry, specialising in
Inward Investment activities, and responsible for providing
financial grants to companies looking to expand their businesses.
He was also the lead Director for European Funds. The NE was a
major beneficiary of these funds which amounted to hundreds of
millions of pounds. Amongst projects which have received funding,
(and in which Tony played a part) are the Centre for Life, The
Millennium Bridge, Gateshead Angel, and the development of Newburn
Riverside.
Tony took early retirement from GONE and spent the first year
travelling, playing golf and generally enjoying a life of
leisure! Missing some intellectual stimulation, he applied
for, and was successful in becoming, Chairman of North East
Ambulance Service in February 2002. Tony was reappointed as
Chairman of the "new" NEAS in July 2006 after the restructuring of
ambulance services which saw 31 Trusts reduced to 11. The new area
includes Teesside which previously came under the jurisdiction of
TENYAS.
Tony is very committed to Equality and Diversity. He is the
Trust Champion and was appointed as the first Chairman of the ASA's
Diversity Forum in April 2007. Tony is a Board member of the
Ambulance Service Network (a national body representing all English
ambulance services) and was a Director of the predecessor body the
Ambulance Services Association. He was Chair of the NHS
Confederation Ambulance Forum in July 2006. He was also a member of
the NHS Confederation's Council and a Trustee of that organization
for three years (2007-2010). Details of more recent positions held
by Tony Dell:
February 2004---to present date
Chair of North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust
January 2001-March 2002
Executive Vice Chair of Bio Sci North-this was a specialist company
created with European funding assistance to promote the development
of fledgling bioscience companies in the North East. It was time
limited by the length of the funding window, but achieved some
positive results. (I agreed to run this company for its short life
after taking early retirement from the civil service).
August 1991-December 2000
I was appointed Director of the Department of Trade and Industry
NE. This morphed into the Government Office North East in 1994. I
was responsible for the economic/industrial portfolio, with special
reference to Inward Investment. I also held responsibility for
European Funds, with a budget of £600 million over a four year
period.
August 1985-July 1991
UK trade negotiator in Geneva for the Department of Trade and
Industry. I was the resident trade expert based in Geneva for the
duration of the Uruguay Round of Trade negotiations, which was (at
that time) the most ambitious series of international trade
negotiations attempted.
Prior to August 1985
I held a number of different positions in the Department of Trade
and Industry dealing with a wide range of different subjects.
During this time I became familiar with the political environment
and the Whitehall ways of working.
