Using PTS
Patient Transport Services
Every day, our Patient Transport Service takes members of the
public to and from their homes to outpatients' appointments,
clinics, physiotherapy or on non-urgent transfers between different
hospitals.
The PTS team make more than one million journeys every
year between the various hospitals in the North East. When
required, we go further afield. On average we clock up 4,500
patient journeys per day.

PTS crews are all qualified Ambulance Care Assistants with
specialist knowledge of first aid, driving skills and patient
moving and handling techniques.
We also have more than one hundred voluntary car drivers, who help
take patients to non-urgent appointments when required.
If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a
voluntary driver, contact beverley.smith@neas.nhs.uk
All PTS staff and volunteers are dedicated to reach the highest
standards of care, and to exceed the government target of 95% of
patients arriving within 30 minutes of their appointments. In fact,
over the last year, 97% of patients arrived before or on time for
their appointments

PTS Review
We are always investigating new ways to improve the service we
provide to the public. As such, we are currently reviewing our
Patient Transport Service.
Areas we are looking at include increasing our capacity to take
people to and from hospital appointments, and also communicating
with our patients through social media.
