I am a self employed farmer. I was Regional Director of the Countryside Alliance from 1997 to 2009.
My background is rural having been in farming all of my life. I spent a period working for a pressure group promoting the Countryside.
My father died when I was 15 years old so college was not an option as I had to run the family farm. The Young Farmers club was where I got into working with people and then into politics for Tynedale Council and Northumberland County Council. I specialise in Children's Services and I am Chairman of that scrutiny.
I live in Belsay on a farm and in my spare time I try to grow vegetables in my field and look after my hens. I sing a bit for Hexham Amateur Stage Society and Pont Prep.
