Public invited to nominate staff for annual awards
Members of the public are being invited to nominate ambulance service staff for going above and beyond to help them.
Every year, North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (NEAS) holds the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) Awards to recognise staff who have given exceptional care.
This year’s event will take place at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Durham on 9 October – and members of the public have until 31 July to make a nomination.
The celebration also incorporates the long service awards for staff who have been with the ambulance service for 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years.
NEAS covers the whole of the North East, stretching across a square area of 3,200 miles and clocking up millions of miles a year.
Over the last year, NEAS has responded to more than 380,000 incidents, treated more than 18,000 through telephone advice and has completed more than 740,000 patient transport journeys.
The trust employs more than 2,000 staff across four service areas – Emergency Care, the Contact Centre, the Patient Transport Service and Support Services.
Each service area has its own category in the ABCD Awards, with the other coveted categories being Team of the Year, Unsung Hero, Services to Community, Volunteer of the Year, Mentor of the year, Student of the year, and Chairman’s Award.

Ashley Winter, Chairman, said: “Our staff do a fantastic job, often in difficult circumstances, all year round and our ABCD Awards are a great way to celebrate those individuals who go that extra mile.
“Often they believe they are ‘just doing their job’ but the care they give is first class and, unfortunately, often goes unrecognised publicly.
“Patients are at the heart of everything we do at NEAS, making our Public Nomination award perhaps one of the most important ones of the night. We therefore welcome as many public nominations as possible.”
The winner of the Chairman’s Award last year was Lynn Corrigan, the section manager for Accident and Emergency dispatch.
Lynn joined the trust 17 years ago and began her career with the Ambulance Service as a GP out of hours call handler.
Lynn now manages a team of over 75 people who dispatch ambulances every day. It is their job to send the most appropriate resource to patients in the right time, based on their disposition. She also oversees a clinical hub of qualified paramedics who support patients whilst an ambulance is travelling and continually reassess patients to ensure they are safe.
She was recognised for her dedication to the service at all times of the day and night, regardless of the time of year.
She said: “I genuinely believe in the people who work here. They all go above and beyond, showing real dedication to their patients and the organisation. It’s more than a job."
