Information for GPs - Booking Urgent Transport

With rising demand for urgent transport, North East Ambulance Service is looking to improve the booking service to respond quickly and efficiently to transport requests from GPs.

We have produced a booklet to guide GPs through the process.

Please note, this service is for GPs only.

Booking checklist

  • Name and contact details of the requestee
  •  Any special requirements/instructions
  • Patient full name
  •  Will the patient have an escort, such as a friend or family member with them
  • Patient NHS Number
  •  Timescales - 1, 2 or 4 hour
  •  Patient postcode
  •  Patient key safe code (if they have one)
  •  Patient house name/number
  •  Does the patient need clinical intervention on route, such as oxygen or pain relief?
  •  Patient contact number
  •  Summary of the patient's condition
  •  Destination (including ward or clinic name)
  •  Patient's mobility (is the patient able to walk or do they require a wheelchair)

Please ensure your patient is ready to travel for the time requested to avoid delays.

To help decide the most appropriate response, please consider the following:

  • Age of the patient
  • Condition the patient is being admitted for
  • Risk of the patient developing complications
  • Speed that any complications could develop
  • Does the patient have someone supporting them nearby
