More NEAS employees would recommend the organisation as a place to work

7th March 2024

The latest NHS Staff Survey Results published today (7 March) show morale is improving at North East Ambulance Service.

The NHS Staff Survey runs every year from September and November and asks a series of questions to understand how employees feel. All questions are the same regardless of the organisation, allowing for comparison between organisations and sectors.

A total of 1,680 NEAS employees took the opportunity to fill in the survey between September and November 2023, with more than 300 additional colleagues filling in the survey this year compared to the previous year.

This year’s results show improved morale generally, with more colleagues recommending NEAS as a place to work and the care provided by the organisation.

Operational colleagues in all three divisions across the region also reported feeling more supported by their managers.

There were also improvements in the following areas:

  • Experience of harassment, bullying or abuse whilst at work from patients, relatives or other members of the public
  • Work-related stress and burnout
  • Work-life balance
  • Feeling NEAS acts on concerns raised by patients
  • Pay satisfaction
  • Being able to meet the conflicting demands on time at work
  • Teams working better together to achieve objectives
  • Having adequate materials, supplies and equipment at work

Helen Ray, NEAS Chief Executive said: “This year’s results show a positive impact from the improvements we are making as a service - more of our workforce would recommend our organisation as a place to work and for the care we provide.  Overall, we are also seeing an improvement in staff morale and health and wellbeing.

“However, despite making some significant improvements as an organisation, we recognise there is still plenty of work for us to do.

“We are in the process of strengthening staff development opportunities, including increasing the number of apprenticeship programmes we offer, as well as investing in leadership support and providing more opportunities for our teams to come together to celebrate their achievements.

“We are committed to continually improving our organisation to ensure we provide the best possible service for our patients and that we are an employer of choice in our region and will be working closely with our teams to bring further improvements to fruition over the coming year.”
