Living with an ambulance worker

The North East Ambulance Service employs over 3,300 people. As an organisation, we are committed to providing the best possible care to our patients and our colleagues.

Working in the ambulance service can be incredibly rewarding but can prove challenging for family and friends too. They see them deal with a high-pressure environment, long hours, and difficult working conditions. These variables can all have an impact on mental health, relationships, and loved ones.

Friends and families might find themselves picking up more responsibilities, trying to help and support their loved ones. They may also see our staff be affected by particularly difficult or traumatic jobs or the death of a colleague, and it can be heart breaking if you're unsure on how to help them.

Our family handbook has been launched to provide information on mental health and bereavement, and to support you & your families whilst you serve the community.

This handbook has been designed to help you:

• Recognise the signs of common mental health conditions and how you can support someone suffering with the condition;

• Know where you can go for more information, advice, and support;

• Take care of yourself or a loved one struggling with their mental health;

• Help someone struggling with grief and loss;

• Know how to talk to children about mental health or bereavement.
