The Road Ahead: our 10-year strategy

The North East Ambulance Service has an important role to play in the future of urgent and emergency care across the region. The Road Ahead sets out our long-term strategy for the next decade, building on the progress we have already made while responding to changing needs, increasing demand, and a rapidly evolving health and care landscape. At its heart, the strategy is about protecting what matters most while changing how we deliver care. We will continue to provide a rapid response when lives are at risk, while strengthening clinical assessment, care coordination, partnership working, and community-based care so more people receive the right care, at the right time and in the right place. The strategy has been shaped by the experiences and insight of our colleagues, patients, communities, and partners. It sets out a clear direction for a clinically led, quality-driven NEAS that is outstanding in emergency response, increasingly active in integrated community care, and trusted by patients, valued by colleagues and respected by partners.

Understanding our new strategy
The Road Ahead is the full NEAS 10-year strategy, setting out our long-term direction and how we will respond to changing population needs, increasing demand, new technology and pressures across the wider health and care system. It explains how we will protect our core emergency response role while evolving the way we deliver care, with a focus on quality, clinical leadership, partnership and sustainable services for the future.
This document sets out the evidence behind NEAS’s future clinical priorities, drawing on population health data, clinical insight, future demand forecasting and feedback from communities. It identifies five key clinical priorities — respiratory, cardiac, stroke, gastrointestinal and mental health crisis — and looks at how demand is expected to change by 2031.
The Clinical Operating Model explains how NEAS will put the strategy into practice clinically, changing how care is assessed, coordinated and delivered around the needs of patients and communities. It sets out the proposed integrated clinical assessment approach, the four core areas of care, and the role of stronger community partnerships, innovation, technology and investment in our people.
This summary provides an overview of NEAS’s long-term strategy and the direction the organisation will take over the next decade. It explains why NEAS needs to evolve, what will remain at the heart of the service, and our four key ambitions around care and quality, people, reliable and responsive services, and partnership.
